Guild Wars PvP Quick Tips

Individual PvP Tips

•Know your professions well; the more you know a profession as a whole, the better you will be when playing that profession in a team build.

•There are a number of different ways to combine professions, skills, and attributes. Being familiar with not just your own profession but those who may be countering you, can give you that extra edge in battle. Know the effects of each skill and how it works!

•Practice dodging projectiles. Some projectiles can come at you at different speeds making them easier or harder to dodge. Dodging could help you avoid taking big hits from skills like Lightning Orb and can also help you avoid negative effects from skills such as Pin Down. Keeping an eye on the skills your opponent is using will help you succeed at dodging even when your back is turned.

•Test a character in as many different situations as possible to know the strengths and weaknesses of that character.

•Understand your role within the team and concentrate on that role. Players who try to do everything can easily spread themselves too thin and become less effective.

•Most importantly: Help the team; look out for it before yourself.

•Skills cost different amounts of energy to use; know how much they cost, and how much you have available.

•Know the cast times of your skills and the best way to time them all. If you are creating a spiker it is better to use skills with long casting times first then follow up with short casting time skills.

•Before engaging a team in battle take the time to "tab/cycle" through their entire team. Knowing what your up against is always beneficial.

•If the opportunity presents itself tag your opponent’s flag or relic to return it back to its origin.

•Keep in mind that the User Interface is customizable. Take out unnecessary interface items; keep the interface clean and small so you can view more of the playing field. Set your interface so you can see everything at once. This will help your reaction time and cut down on mistakes. Enlarge the area where it shows what skills your opponent is using to get a better visual for interrupts. For Monks enlarge your party window. Enlarging your compass will help you keep a better eye on your opponents movements around the map.

•If forced to retreat from combat, keep your eyes open for terrain that can be used to block your foe's line of sight.

•Remember that your character is solid. If a foe is charging towards your Monk, you can run into their path and block them.

•When running away from an opponent, the attacker actually inflicts more damage. To retreat successfully, use skills that increase your run speed or help you evade or block attacks.

•Don’t chase unnecessarily, often times your opponents will try to draw you into their team, away from your healers, then they will turn their focus-fire onto you.

•Stick with the rest of your team; if you find yourself too far away you could be easily taken out by your enemy.

•When playing a healing Monk, direct heals are good for keeping Health up, while Enchantments such as Healing Seed or Healing Hands work well for countering strong focus-fire. Save your big skills with long recharge times for when you are certain the enemy is making a concentrated effort to kill one of your allies.

•Healers should try to keep their allies' Health as high as possible. Do not wait until your ally is at low Health to provide healing, you might not be able to react quickly enough to a sudden spike of focused damage.

•Casters, remember to use your wands for additional damage when in-between casting spells, the constant damage adds up. Keep an eye out for spirit shackles you won't want to attack with your wand if this skill is on you, as it takes 5 energy from you each time you attack.

•Rangers and casters with wands or other projectile attacks should try to get to high ground whenever possible in order to increase their damage.

•If your opponent gains the high ground, try to get to the same level or cast area effects in their area to make them scatter. Don't let them get the advantage on you.

•Ranged characters should keep close enough to the target so that if the foe falls back, you are still in attack range but far enough so that targeting you is a nuisance.

•Stack your important Hexes and Enchantments to make it harder to remove them.

•Use area-of-effect skills when targets are grouped together to maximize its effectiveness.

•Disrupting enemy Energy supplies or skill recharge is often more effective than being able to deal out large amounts of damage.

•If you are using interrupt skills, try to get a sense of the casting speeds and importance of every spell so that you know when and what to interrupt.

•Use the arena to practice your timing for interruptions.

•Interrupting your opponents heal can be a fast way to take down your enemy.

•After killing an opponent, always keep an eye out for their teammates to attempt a resurrection. Be sure to alert your own team, you must interrupt it!

•Pay attention to your surroundings when resurrecting a fallen teammate. If resurrected with low health your teammate could easily be killed again and giving him more death penalty.

Team PvP Tips Top of Page

•Organization and discipline are important. Plan your strategy beforehand, and make sure everyone knows their individual and team roles.

•Teamwork, tactics, knowledge and use of terrain, and anticipation of enemy playing styles are all important aspects of combat, and none should be neglected. As a team always work on improving teamwork and building efficiency.

•Strategies used during a match will vary depending on your team's build and your enemy's build.

•Use the mini-map. Drawing on the radar map provides great assistance when explaining strategy.

•Use a voice chat program such as Teamspeak or Ventrillo this will speed of reaction times and help to better coordinate attacks and strategies.

•Take the time before a match to go over strategy and assign roles, it’s well worth it.

•Designate one person as the main target caller to reduce confusion.

•Do not argue or question a strategy during a match. Even if the decision is wrong, it is better for the team to continue together as a team than to split up. Discuss the strategy after the fight.

•Player morale is just as important as character morale. Keep the team thinking positively.

•Remember that you are playing as a team; stay in range of your healers and retreat from the front lines if you are being targeted.

•Stick together, while it’s a rather simple concept, execution is rarely done properly. There is little strength in a scattered party.

•Stay together as a group. One absent player can mean the difference between success and failure.

•Focused team attacks on a single enemy can rapidly kill that enemy. Spreading attacks across multiple targets allows enemy healers to respond efficiently.

•Generally target enemy Monks first, then switch to situational high-priority targets or targets of opportunity, next target characters with a monk secondary to prevent resurrecting, otherwise continuing targeting based on the target with the lowest armor level.

•Make use of the geographic layout of the area. Many maps will provide different advantages try to force the fight into the most beneficial area for your team.

•Don't let your opponent get higher ground.

•If your team is caught between two opposing teams and you can’t take the heat, try to move behind one of the other teams in order to place them in the middle instead.

•Make use of your NPC’s for additional support.

•Avoid having your healers resurrect teammates. There is no time for them to stop healing in the middle of a battle. It is better to have a secondary monk resurrect.

•If an opponent was recently resurrected by one of his teammates he will generally be low in either health or energy, therefore it would be wise for your team or a few players from your team to direct your attacks back at that character since he is weak especially if the character is a healer.

•It’s important to be able to make adjustments while playing; there are many strategies you can counter by simply changing tactics on the fly. Analyze your equipped skills and look for what you can do to minimize the effect of the opposition.

•Always leave an escape route open to an area where your team can regroup. If possible never back your team into a corner with no way of retreating.

•If some of your team members have died it is usually best for any players remaining alive to retreat from battle and not gain Death Penalty. Retreat back to an area where they can regroup with their resurrected allies.  Once regrouped push forward with a counter attack.

•Never give up and remain calm. Do not allow fear or the thought of losing influence your decision making. A solution is more likely to be found with a positive outlook. A single inspired decision can turn around what looks to be a losing situation into a potential for victory.

Guild vs. Guild Tips Top of Page

•Choose a type of Guild Hall that best suits your playing style and team strategy.

•Visit all the Halls by going to the Ferry Cathan in Lion's Arch. Take a members of your team into each maps and discuss your strategies for that map. When in battle it is important that everyone knows each map so there is no confusion to your team strategy.

•Pay close attention to the mini map it is important to be aware of where your opponents are at all times, some teams will try to sneak around side paths to assault your hall.

•Place a high priority on the flag stand, with control your team can gain moral boosts every 2 minutes up to a max of +10% moral.

•Do not allow the enemy to hold the flag stand for prolonged periods of time. The morale boost can make a big difference in the early game. In addition, do not allow the enemy to erase their accumulated death penalty.

•Keep an eye out for an opponent carrying the flag, alert your team of the flag carrier as soon as you spot him.

•Warriors or Rangers generally make the best relic carries because of their high armor level, and variety of stances.

•Use movement debuffs and remove any enchantments when attacking the flag carrier to give your team the best chance at defending the flag stand.

•Remember that you can use your body to block an enemy from reaching his goal. Body blocking can help prevent an enemy from capturing the flag stand.

•Engage targets attacking your flag carrier to provide the carrier with enough temporary cover so he can capture the flag.

•Use your NPCs for additional damage while battling.

•If at anytime you can grab your opponents repair kit do so and hide it in your guild hall or use it to repair the catapult at their base, this will prevent your opponents from ever repairing the catapult.

•Necrotic traversal can be used as an alternative way to get inside enemy guild halls as opposed to having your thief unlock the door.

•Make sure to kill opposing NPCs before storming a base, do not ignore them. NPC’s attack the player with the lowest Armor level, which generally is the monk.

•Keep an eye on the match timer and attempt to kill the enemy Guild Lord if you find yourselves with a numerical advantage and time available before the next resurrection.

•If you find yourself in a losing situation keep in mind that at the 20-minute mark "Victory or Death!" will sound and the remaining NPCs will rush the center of the map. Play well and rush out with them and you can potentially turn a loss into a victory.

•If you fighting a team that has holed up in their guild hall and you cannot seem to break their lines because of the support from NPCs first try taking out the NPCs.  If you cannot succeed at that, use "Victory or Death!" to your advantage and allow the NPCs to march toward the middle of the map which will leave the Guild Lord unguarded. If possible take a side entrance avoiding the NPCs and take out their Guild Lord.

Heroes Ascent (8v8) Tips Top of Page

•The max 10% Morale Boost can easily be obtained in the first Tombs PvP map, The Underworld, by killing the Ghostly Hero before you finish off the enemy team.

•In Tombs battles, eliminate the enemy Ghostly Hero immediately after every even minute. This is especially important during “Capture the Relic” maps where the Hero is required to make a capture.

•Bring the Ghostly Hero along with your team for additional damage.

•Watch the clock and avoid resurrecting teammates just before the 2-minute mark when they’ll be resurrected automatically.

•Use the Priest for additional healing if you are low on health.

•Watch out for characters trying to slip in behind your team to attack your priest.

•Be alert of ranged characters attacking your priest from afar.

•Keep an eye on the match timer and attempt to kill the enemy Priest if you find yourselves with a numerical advantage and time available before the next resurrection.

•Body blocking in numbers works well to prevent an enemy from capturing a Relic.

•Use your body to block an enemy from capturing the obelisk stand

•Carrying the relic slows your character. Warriors generally make the best relic carries because of their high armor level and run buffs.

•Use movement debuffs to defend the relic.

•You can stop the Ghostly Hero from capturing the altar by body blocking him and not allowing him to get to the center of the altar.

•Use knockdown or interrupt skills to prevent a Ghostly Hero from capturing the altar.

•Area-of-effect spells are the key to attacking a well-guarded Dais.

•Press and hold ALT and rotate the view to locate relics, and stands.

•Dropping the relic for a teammate to carry can be risky but can be very effective in capturing the relic. For an example: A Warrior’s Sprint ends drop for another Warrior with Sprint charged to carry. Another situation may be your character is low on health, dropping the relic before your character dies may catch your opponent off-guard allowing you to pick up the relic before they are ready for it to fall.

•While carrying the resurrect orb or flag you cannot attack, therefore casters make the best carriers of orbs and flags in Tombs.

PvP Build Designing Tips Top of Page

•All builds have advantages and disadvantages, keep those in mind at all times.  The pros and cons should be considered when both designing and playing the build. Try to enhance the advantages and minimize the disadvantages.

•It is important to design a build to your team's playstyle.  Find a good base setup that works for your team and use that as a template for designing builds.

•Design your build from a base idea and then select skills that best support your idea.

•When designing a team build, remember to design characters who support each other well.

•Give more complex builds to players with the most experience.

•It may be easiest for the target caller to play a character that is simple, so the caller can concentrate more on the battle and targets.

•Diversity can make your attacks more difficult to counter, and allow you to adapt on the fly.

•Avoid using characters from only one profession, while your team may be very powerful in one area, you’ll be equally weak in others, and will likely lose to more diverse teams.

•The build should not be easily countered and should have the ability to counter a "trick" build used by enemies without major modification. This usually means bringing a good mix of offensive and defensive skills and avoiding skills that are useful only in particular situations.

•Make sure your build does not have a "single point of failure" that can be exploited by the enemy. When your entire build relies on one character or one skill and that character is countered, you run the likely risk of the entire build failing. For example, if your build makes heavy use of Blood is Power and that skill is only available to a single character in your build, all other characters will suffer a lack of Energy if that character dies.

•Always keep in mind the worst case scenario and minimize its effect if you can.

•Always have a strategy for keeping your team alive, either through healing, armor buffs, or other methods.

•A good team build includes a strategy for protecting the healers, who are the lifeblood of your team.

•A Monk who specializes in Protection Prayers pairs well with a Monk who specializes in Healing Prayers. The Protection Monk reduces the damage that allies receive, thus allowing the Healing Monk to use cheaper healing skills even though those skills heal for less.

•Sometimes you don’t have to kill a foe to remove it from a fight. A Mesmer can shut down an enemy caster temporarily, or a Necro can prevent an enemy Warrior or Ranger from attacking.

•Analyze casting time when selecting skills. Having a large number of skills with long casting times can make you vulnerable, as you cannot move while casting and the enemy will have a lot of time to react.

•A character using high Energy skills with no Energy Management (such as Energy Steals) will rapidly become less effective in a longer fight.

•Consider Energy Management on each of your characters.  Energy is a important resource for casters and also a good counter to energy denial builds.

•A character using skills with long recharge timers can find itself with nothing to do at critical times.

•While equipping Hex and Enchantment spells, keep in mind that they are removable, and never depend a 100% on these skills.

•Bringing Hex, Enchantment, and Condition removal skills is vital for success.

•Use the random Arenas to test individual character builds.

•Learn which skills work well with others; a good team build allows team members to set up and execute complex maneuvers.

•The best way to find fantastic skill combos is to try everything.

•After testing a build each player should consult the rest of the team before making any changes. Any changes on one character can effect the rest of the team.

•Take into consideration the current "meta-game" in Guild-vs-Guild matches. Keep a close eye on what builds your rivals are using and adjust your own builds to suit. Be aware that the more guilds there are that use a given build type (for example, lots of Hex spells), the more likely it is that there will be builds designed to counter that build (for example, lots of counters for Hex spells).

•When playing competitively, it is best to play a build with which you are comfortable. Know your skills, when to use them, and how they can help your allies.
